Rotary Supports the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra
The Club was invited to attend a recent performance by the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra, and Lindy and I were asked to attend on the President's behalf and represent Rotary Camberwell.

This community-based orchestra has been performing for over 90 years, and Rotary is a supporter via our efforts at the Camberwell Sunday Market: Rotary Balwyn pays the City of Boroondara a licence fee, and this fee is returned to community organisations like the Orchestra via Boroondara Community Grants.

As guests of George Deutsch, who is President of the Zelman Symphony and plays a viola, we enjoyed a wonderful evening of beautiful music, and particularly enjoyed the Bruch Violin Concerto with Sophie Rowell.

It's good to know Rotary supports, either directly or indirectly, such worthy community organisations.

President Elect 2023 / 2024 and President for 2024 / 2025
Dear Members,

At our dinner meeting I advised those present that the board and I had spent many months seeking a President Elect for the 2023 / 2024 year to take up the Presidency in 2024 / 2025.

This process had also involved other members speaking with several potential candidates. Unfortunately, the answers were a resounding “NO” for a host of reasons and we respect those reasons.

However, late in 2023 a member did advise that they would consider being President Elect but could only give 50% in their Presidential year.

I met with that member in early January 24 and had a one-on-one conversation suggesting that they should be the single head of the club and that the board would support as and when required. However, the board did understand that the member would only take up the role if they could share the role with another. In other words, co-preside.

At the February 24 board meeting a discussion was held and several options were discussed:
  1. The member would ask individual persons if they would co preside
  2. I would ask other members if they were willing to co-preside
  3. The nominee was offered the option of co-presiding over the year with a past president for each 3-month period
For the first two options a co-president could not be found. The third option was subsequently rejected by the member who nominated.

As we are very close to the new Presidential year, I felt the need to resolve this matter without further delay. Therefore, after some considerable thought and discussion with my wife, I advised the board that under the terms of our by-laws given a successor was not elected, I as the President accepted to have my term extended for up to one year to be President for 2024 / 2025. The board fully supported this decision.

The prospect excites me as I believe we have had a very good year thus far. I see energy displayed by our members and chairs working to the goals I set at the start of the year and want to see this continue.

The increase in our membership with some well credentialled people, potential growth of our ROMP initiative and as mentioned last week the prospect of a Rotaract Club at Swinburne University all bode well for the future of this club.

Naturally I look forward to leading and representing this club with your continued support.

Membership Presentation
Our Membership Chair Fabienne Nichola gave a simple but insightful presentation on membership in Rotary. The key points I took out of it were:
  • Zone 8 – Membership has declined by 26% and Clubs have declined by 12%
  • District 9800 – Camberwell is in the Top five clubs for members
  • District 9800 – Camberwell was in the top five clubs for membership growth in 2022/2023
  • While some resignations may be caused by disputes or lack of vibrancy in a club, business and life changes are by far, the major reason…
  • By April 24 we will have inducted six new members and there are others under assessment
  • Keeping our Website and Social media presence current is having a positive impact
  • An opportunity has been recently identified for a Rotaract club at Swinburne University.
Given recent issues with member health and personal circumstances Chair Fabienne would welcome any assistance on membership activities.
Art Show Presentation
Chair Jon Oppy mentioned that this is our 59th Art show and the committee is well into Art Show activities. Additionally, it is the 11th year at Swinburne University
  • The website is up and running
  • Entries are now open, and our first entry was received on 27th March
  • The Roster will be managed a little differently this year. Last year’s roster has been forwarded to members and all they need to do is advise of any changes for this year
  • Sponsorship is slow and steady but any assistance that members can provide in terms of identifying sponsors would be appreciated
  • The Plein Air activity will again take place with prizes offered this year
  • Members should continue to be aware of the support that Bendigo Bank provides and see if there could be some support given in return
SAVE THESE DATES!!!

Wednesday 10th April – Servants Community Housing

The club is organising a fellowship night at Servants Community Housing. Spitting Image will provide catering.

Tuesday 16th April 24 – Cluster Club Meeting (Book through Clubrunner)

Please note change to speaker. Dr Monique Ryan, Independent Member in the Federal Parliament is replacing Kate Thwaites.

The format of the evening will basically be a Question & Answer session, with questions coming from the moderator Bob Batrouney.

However, this note is a request to invite members to forward potential questions to Bob.Batrouney@merlvic.com.au

The questions must be non-party political and mainly relating to matters concerning the lives and roles of female politicians in Parliament. The same questions will be addressed to both participants and hopefully discussion will evolve between them and provide an insight into the challenges and circumstances facing our female politicians on a daily basis.

Having both a Federal and a State member, and Labor and Independent member, should prove to be most interesting.

We'll also be sharing the details on our Facebook page tomorrow, making it available to any Rotarians who wish to join, but wanted to share this with you and your clubs first, especially given its auspicious timing at the end of this particular Rotary Year.

With the Rotary E-Club of Melbourne transitioning to the new E-Clubs Community Group made up of clubs across Zone 8, we especially wanted to emphasise both links to our new collaborators across the Zone, and our close and continuing friendship with the clubs of the Batman Cluster, which has been our home for many years, and with whom we look forward to continuing to serve .

Regards,
Stephen

The planning for the D9800 Conference has definitely ramped up, with the conference now just a few short weeks away.  You may recall that during the registration process when you puchased your tickets for the Conference, we asked for an indication as to your potential interest in activities to be planned for Friday 12th April.

Based on the feedback received we have now arranged two activities, a social round of golf at the Bendigo Golf Course or a social game of bowls at the Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club.   Details of each option are as follows -

D9800 Conference Social Golf - Friday, 12th April - 1pm Start

Bendigo Golf Club

33 Golf Course Road, Ascot 3551

A 9 Hole Round

Cost is $20.00 per player (paid on the day) - Drinks at Bar Prices

Clubs and/or Golf Cart Hire is available - bookings in advance are recommended

D9800 Conference Social Bowls - Friday, 12th April - 12:30pm Start

Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club
1 Station Street, Kangaroo Flat 3555
2 Games of 10 Ends - Drawn Pairs
$15 Green Fee (paid on the day) includes nibbles, tea & coffee. Drinks at bar prices.
Casual dress. Flat sole shoes or bare feet.
Bowls available for use if required.

Are you interested and keen to enjoy a social afternoon playing either of these sports?  Then simply email d9800conference@gmail.com to book your place, indicate which sport you want to play and then turn up on the day ready to enjoy one of our wonderful sporting facilities in Bendigo.

Bookings for both events will close on 25th March 2024 - this gives you plenty of time to pack the clubs or polish the bowls in readiness to head to Bendigo for a great social gathering leading into our wonderful 'Gathering on the Goldfields' Conference.

Regards,

Alison Bacon
