Club News
On 18 April 2024, Michael Blood and President George de Souza attended the Box Hill Institute Student Awards. For the first time, the club sponsored three awards. The winners were:
Foundation Student of the Year - Celeste Rattray-Wood left; Certificate I in Work Education
Celeste (middle) had a remarkable 2023, filled with impressive academic and work-related achievements including part-time employment for the Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with a Disability (VALID). She attended the Speak Out Disability Expo in Tasmania on behalf of the organisation and spoke about her personal experiences living with a disability.
Trainee Student of the Year: Karen Sproat; Diploma Early Childhood Education & Care.
Karen’s (far right) aptitude for early childhood education is reflected in the outstanding quality of her coursework and her ability to apply her learning at the workplace.
She has received lots of praise for the skills and knowledge she displayed during her kindergarten placement.
Trainee Student of the Year: David Zanotto; Certificate III in HorticultureLeadership is one of David’s great strengths and he took pride in guiding younger students through the challenging parts of the course. He often volunteered to lead group projects, and his maturity and relationship management skills with peers and other stakeholders shone through.
David consistently worked hard to stay on top of his studies, and he would make a great ambassador for BHI.

On 24 April 2024, the club received a letter of thanks. Below is an extract:
Dear Michael & George,
I am writing to extend my sincerest gratitude for your contribution to the Box Hill Institute Student Awards.
The event was a resounding success with 40 student finalists recognised for their outstanding achievements across various sectors of vocational, secondary, and higher education.  As an award partner, your contribution plays a crucial role in supporting the future leaders of our emerging workforce and helps to shine a spotlight on their remarkable accomplishments as students.
It is through partnerships like yours that we can honour exceptional talent and celebrate our commitment to learning. Your investment not only acknowledges our students’ hard work but also motivates them to continue striving for excellence in their academic and professional pursuits.
Your collaboration and support are vital to ensure we continue to meet our commitment to life-changing learning. We thank you for your contribution and we are excited to build on the strength of our partnership in the future.
Kind Regards,
Hemant Kokularupan

What is it really like being a member of Parliament as a woman? Rotary Camberwell got the opportunity to find out at a recent multi-club event hosted by Rotary Balwyn on 16 April 2024.

A first-hand insight from Dr Monique Ryan, current member of the House of Representatives for Kooyong and Jessica Wilson, current member of the Legislative Assembly for Kew, shared their experience.

The audience was captivated by a refreshingly frank and personal perspective of their individual account with humorous anecdotes, together with a healthy respect and at times support and friendship from other women in Parliament.
On Wednesday 10 April 2024, the Rotary Club of Camberwell hosted by CEO Amanda Donohoe for a dinner at a Servants Community House in Kew, Romana House which accommodates 24 male and female residents, with two live-in managers. https://www.servants.org.au/
Residents shared a meal provided by Rotary Camberwell and enjoyed interactions with club members. To protect the privacy of residents, we are unable to publish their photos. Two residents shared their stories. Whilst both residents have different backgrounds, they both emphasized that living at Romana House was like living with a family. A home where they feel secure, valued, and respected.
Servants runs four Community Houses in Boroondara. These houses provide safe and affordable long-term accommodation for people who are at risk of homelessness. They support residents by establishing connections with support agencies and community group. Rotary Camberwell is proud to support Servants. The bottom line is that if Servants did not do this vital work, its residents would most likely be homeless.
We also heard about a new Servants project which has taken off with great success. This venture produces ‘For the Love of Good’ – an organic, semi sparkling apple juice.  Residents from Romana go to regenerative Warragul farms to pick the apples for the juice. It is manufactured and canned locally and the last batch sold out. This is in addition to the honey Servants produces locally. https://fortheloveofgood.au/
Biggin Scott Boroondara is well represented at Rotary Camberwell with the recent induction on 3 April 2024 of Real Estate Sales Executive Darren Li joining another employee, existing member Jessica Wat.
In his thank you speech, Darren referred to how closely the current Rotary International theme of ‘Create Hope in the World’ resonated with him personally. His maturity and enthusiasm to contribute to community service defies his years as the youngest club member. Our hope is that Darren will be impactful representing a young adult’s perspective and as a role model, promoting the importance of positive community involvement amongst his peers.
President George de Souza attended the Vaisakhi Celebrations and to commemorate Sikh Volunteer Australia’s (SVA) 10th anniversary at Bunjil Place, Narre Warren on Sunday 7 April 2024.
Rotary Camberwell was amongst a large number of individuals, representatives from Vic Police, SES, Fire Rescue Victoria, faith leaders, school and college principals, volunteers, volunteer organisations and SVA staff members who were recognized on the day. Overall, more than 238 Appreciation Certificates were awarded. Amongst the guests were Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, Victorian Opposition Leader John Pesutto, Bruce MP Julian Hill and many more. The Governor-General of Australia His Excellency David Hurley AC DSC (Retired) and on behalf of Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley sent a message of congratulations by video.
The Prime Minister and the Victorian Premier addressed the gathering respectfully wearing traditional Sikh turban and scarf. Referring to the SVA Mr. Albanese said 'They do extraordinary work. During the pandemic they provided food for students who were in desperate need for that support. During the bushfires, during floods… wherever there are issues confronting Australians, we see the best of the Australian character and there's no community organisation that has done more than Sikh Volunteers Australia. We see them whether it be here in Victoria, or up in Lismore (where he discovered Sikh volunteers were not as he expected from the local area but had driven up from Melbourne), wherever there are floods or natural weather events, we see people putting their values into practice by providing that support to their fellow Australians who are in need.'
These sentiments were echoed by many others. A recurring theme is that the SVA doesn’t just aspire to do community service they demonstrate their community service through their food vans serving meals to the disadvantaged and emergency workers. They can be relied on for immediate response to emergencies.
The SVA received the Australian Human Rights Heroes 2020 Award for their efforts during Covid lock downs.

The final message addressing the broader audience is the vital role of volunteers to not only be there when needed but their presence symbolizes a community that cares.
What is Vaisakhi?

Victor Wang was inducted on 27 March 2024. He was supported by his wife Kathy Hou and daughter Sarah. Victor selected Camberwell Rotary on the basis of an assessment of its programs and activities on our website. He holds a Master of Engineering and brings a wealth of professional experience with over 28 years in the IT sector working with a number of international companies. His currently manages a venture investment and property management business. We look forward to his contribution and leadership in the future.
Each year Boroondara council invites the general public to attend the Volunteer Expo to meet a range of volunteer organisations. On 20 March 2024, a large number of volunteer groups were represented from midday at the Arts Centre providing information to all who attended.
As was the case last year, Rotary Camberwell attended the Expo to seek volunteers for the Camberwell Art Show.
Murray Anderson (left) spent considerable time interacting with those who showed interest which will ultimately result in a good supply of volunteers.
The availability of volunteers provides great support with a range of duties supplementing the work of club members. Mayor Cr Lisa Hollingsworth (left) visited our stall the Expo.
Later that day, she was at the Rotary Camberwell meeting to be inducted as an honorary member.
Rotary Camberwell has a long history of deep connection with the City of Boroondara. Symbolic of this association, is the club’s tradition to invite the mayor as an honorary member. The strong relationship extends over many decades of mutual support which includes the Camberwell Art Show, Boroondara Cares, the Hawthorn Makers, Civic ceremonies, formal club functions and the Volunteer Expo.
We are delighted to have Mayor Cr Lisa Hollingsworth agree to continue this unbroken chain of honorary membership. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration during her current term of office.
Welcome to our newest member Lindy Anderson

Lindy was inducted as a member of the Camberwell Rotary Club on 13 March 2023 and is already well known to members as the supportive wife of existing member Murray Anderson.
Given Lindy’s accomplishments as a business owner’s background coupled with nursing, palliative care and Training and Assessment qualifications, the club is definitely the winner.
The alignment of values is without doubt as she demonstrates a long-standing community connection such as supporting Very Special Kids, setting up the Kew Trader’s Group, being part of the Boroondara Family Network, as well as her ongoing vocation as Justice of the Peace.
On a personal level, Lindy is known for bringing passion, enthusiasm and commitment in all she does. Lindy already has a deep sense of ‘Service Above Self’. Members of the club agree she will be a fabulous Rotarian.
A club meeting was held on 28 February at the RIMERN warehouse in Brunswick. Suzie Cole, Prahan Rotarian who the key lead of the initiative provided a comprehensive tour of the facility.
RIMERN is a multi-club Rotary project operating in Inner Melbourne, providing furniture, appliances and homewares to welfare agency clients who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, post-incarceration, refugee displacement and other crises.

The Rotary Outreach Myeloma Program
The Rotary Outreach Myeloma Program (ROMP), began in 2019 as a special program to mark the Centenary of Rotary in Australia in 2021. Camberwell Rotary Club joined with Myeloma Australia, the only myeloma specific charity in Australia, to build awareness of myeloma and Rotary Club support for myeloma patients and their families living in regional and remote Victorian communities. Today ROMP is supported by up to twenty regional Rotary Clubs across five Rotary Districts and a growing list of cancer treatment centres.
ROMP’s focus is to provide regional nursing scholarships. The scholarship is offered to select registered nurses employed in rural and regional cancer centres or clinics in Victoria to complete a Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing at Melbourne University. The scholarship is funded by participating Rotary clubs, their communities and sponsors. With growing support, the ROMP vision for several more scholarships seem very achievable.

What is Myeloma?
Myeloma, also called Multiple Myeloma, is a type of blood cancer that affects the inside of the bone marrow. It attacks the immune system causing fatigue and can lead to frequent infections.  Only half of all people diagnosed with myeloma survive beyond five years. There is no cure for myeloma. ‘We are tackling myeloma - and all cancers - in regional Victoria, one Rotary Club and one nurse at a time.' For more information see the Myeloma Australia website https://myeloma.org.au/
