We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

Queen Elizabeth II was well known for her enjoyment of a tipple of gin and members who attended last week’s meeting got to share her joy with a tasting of sensational gin following a presentation from our guest speaker John Conte.

John outlined his many entrepreneurial pursuits. One of which is Aerochute Industries involving the design and manufacture of a single and later dual seat powered parachute ‘aircraft’ for sale and joy rides, the first of its kind in Australia. With the same ingenuity and passion, John devoted his energies designing improved medical equipment for the management of patients in rehab. The inspiration came from his own experience during a lengthy hospital stay after a horrific accident. Much to our delight, John also founded SnowGum Distillery producing gin and liqueurs of unique flavours based upon native Australian botanicals. A sample of some of the products was made available to members and was a fool proof way to ensure all left the meeting with a smile.

Thank you to members who assisted at the last Camberwell Sunday Market – George de Souza, Patrick Docherty and Paul Casha.

The Hawthorn Makers Market on Sunday 2 October enjoyed great attendance on a lovely day. Thank you, Teresa Molella, Graeme Hope, David Baker, Anne Murphy, Adrian Campbell, Don Jago, Patty Laufenberg, Jo-Anne Tamlyn, Michael Blood, Steve Clarke and Nadia Hamilton, for assisting.

Next week’s guest speaker is retired Judge Paul Coghlan. A longstanding supporter of Rotary, he will provide some insights on his remarkable career over what has been some challenging times.

Look forward to seeing you then.

Last Saturday 1 October, President Fabienne and Geoff McCormick accepted an invitation from the committee of Bomber Command Commemorative Association of Victoria and the City of Boroondara to attend a Commemorative Service for Flight Lieutenant Lesley Knight, DSO RAAF, at Bowen Gardens, Camberwell. Below is an overview of the purpose of the event:

Lesley Gordon Knight DSO was born on 3 March 1921 and grew up in Bowen Street, Camberwell before he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1941 and was an Australian bomber pilot during the Second World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1943 for his role in Operation Chastise. Lesley Knight's crew, flying in N-Nan, attacked, hit and breached the Eder Dam, the second dam to be attacked, after his comrades had previously scored one hit and one miss.

Four months later, Lesley’s aircraft was badly damaged returning from a mission. His skill and bravery were again displayed as he held the stricken plane steady to allow his seven crewmates to bail out. The aircraft hit the ground hard, cartwheeled and Lesley was killed of age of twenty two in September 1943. His gallantry allowed the safe exit of his crew from his damaged aircraft and prevented it crashing into the Dutch village of Den Ham.

A wreath of Australian natives was laid at the memorial on behalf of the Camberwell Rotary Club.

HAPPY FACES AT 'THE HAWTHORN'

It was our Sunday October 2 Hawthorn Makers Market. Notwithstanding Daylight Saving changes impacting on sleeping habits and a slow start, the numbers were up for the day with terrific support from our 62 stallholders (43 inside and 19 outside). It was homemade happiness in bright sunshine. There was even a touch of the upcoming Festive Season. It was in fact our best Market for the year- so far.

Our good member and friend from the Gold Coast Warwick Heil (see pic) joined us as did new member prospect Brett Campbell (see group pic), who will be inducted to the Club later this month. Kerry Anne Frost had some beautiful dresses from Moshi, Tanzania (see pic) with sales assisting her Team Vista project against poverty in Moshi. The variety and quality of goods sold continues to improve as does the standard of presentation. We thank all our volunteers on the day!

Our next Hawthorn Makers Market is on Sunday 6th November from 10-3 at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Your Help Needed for the Sunday Market in October

NOTE: DUE TO A VERY HIGH NUMBER OF NON AVAILABILITIES FOR OCTOBER, THERE ARE VACANCIES ON 23 AND 30 OCT. PLEASE EMAIL JIM O’HARA IF YOU CAN ASSIST.
Dear Rotary members,

Thank you to all clubs who cast their vote in the Zone 8 Regionalisation pilot ballot.

We were delighted with the result with more than 89% of clubs across the zone expressing a YES vote.  This lets us know that there is strong support for a pilot which will enable us to trial, explore, design and evaluate a new regional approach to supporting and governing Rotary and Rotaract clubs in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island region.

We are pleased to advise that 20 out of 21 Districts achieved the required threshold of two thirds majority of clubs voting Yes. The club vote was also endorsed by all 21 District Governors in their role as Rotary International Officers.

Whilst one district had more than 50% of clubs vote yes, it did not meet the two thirds threshold.

At this point in time, we will advise the Rotary International Board of the outcome as well as seek guidance on the path forward.  Thank you for your patience and we will be in touch once we have a clear course of action.

If you require further information, please contact your District Governor.

We would like to thank all Rotary and Rotaract volunteers who have supported this project. We would also like to thank the Rotary International staff at our Sydney office and elsewhere for their ongoing support.

Sincerely,
Ingrid Waugh
Co-Chair Regionalisation Group Zone 8
