We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

As a Geelong member of over thirty years dotted with memories of pain and heartache, enjoying a win at the Grand Final was the order of the day last Saturday regardless of its one sidedness. In the post-match formalities, it became evident that the team members had a deep connection with one another. The club seems to have developed a positive culture of inclusion and cohesiveness contributing to the outcome of consistently high results over time. The club culture struck me as having many parallels with Rotary. The centrality of family values, selfless support for each other and the community, strong friendship bonds, the contribution of a broader group supporting the club while working for a common cause are the core attributes of our club and ones that has and will continue to underpin our success. It’s gratifying to see how when an AFL football club adopts these principles, there is such a strong sense of achievement by all.
Last week we met at Green Acres for a cluster meeting organised by the Balwyn Rotary Club. We were privileged to hear Associate Professor Michael Woodward AM, who is currently Director and Clinical Head of Aged Care Research, Austin Health. He outlined the most recent research findings on Alzheimer’s diseases based on his report on the ABC Four Corners program titled ‘Holding on to Hope’ with Dr Norman Swan which aired on 13 June 2022. Some insights of the presentation were:
Current drug testing indicates significant improvements in pathological results in existing Alzheimer patients
With 20 different trials currently in progress, the future looks positive
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia can be very isolating, open discussions should be encouraged
The importance of daily exercise, a Mediterranean diet, healthy sleep, keeping the brain active and ongoing social engagement in delaying the onset of the disease
By the time you read this Bulletin, Justine Paragreen and John Walmsley will be in Timor Leste to review the Rotary Timor Consortium Project. We look forward to their report on their return.
