Volume 67 | Issue 9 |  5 September 2022

We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

It was pleasing to have a number of members return from time away boosting our attendance numbers, creating a welcome buzz at our meeting last Wednesday night.

As with a number of Rotary clubs, our club meetings have been hybrid meetings using Zoom to ensure ongoing connection with members who are unable to attend in person due to medical and other circumstances. Up to now, we’ve improvised without adequate facilities. Our broadcasting facility was significantly improved at our last meeting with a generous donation of a camera, sound amplifier and tripod from law firm, K&L Gates. Special thanks to Andrew Reid, Director of K&L Gates Client Service and Support, for facilitating the donation.

Our guest speakers, Steve Dunn, Lara Jeyaretnam and Siraj Perera from Bridging Lanka painted a devastating picture of the current challenges faced by the Sri Lankan community. The encouraging news is our three speakers, as board members of Bridging Lanka, are leading a range of projects responding to the social, economic and environmental issues, focussing in a region north of Sri Lanka. Our club’s aspiration, through the International Committee, is to consider the support we provide to such a worthy humanitarian cause.

Thank you, Gary Goldsmith and Nick Pane, for volunteering for the last Camberwell Sunday market. Thank you also to the following for supporting Graeme Hope and Teresa Molella, for the Hawthorn Makers Market on Sunday 4 September 2022: Brenda Innes, Anita Bejerano, Anne Murphy, Jon and Denise Oppy, David Baker, Steve Clarke, John De Carro, Michelle Critchley, Yvonne Wills, Nadia Hamilton, and Justine Paragreen. Many thanks for providing your time to support our club’s activities.

A reminder if you haven’t yet registered for the Melbourne Rotary International Conference (RICON) 2023, please do so before 15 December, when the cost to register increases by US $100.

Next week’s meeting is titled ‘The Future of the Club’. The format will be a brief update of the each Committee’s current activities – this will be limited given Committees will have only met twice since the start of the Rotary year. The Treasurer will provide an overview of the club’s current financial position, having now finalised the Art Show transactions. The key focus of the meeting will be an outline of the membership plan. Much work has been done following member consultation at the membership strategy workshop earlier this year producing the plan which has also been endorsed by the board. Substantial work will be required for the implementation phase. Your support is required to achieve this and it would be appreciated if you would ensure your attendance at next week’s meeting.

Look forward to seeing you then.
President Rotary Club of Camberwell 2022-23

Zone 8 Regionalisation pilot ballot

The Regionalisation pilot is proposed to explore, develop and test new ways of operating Rotary and Rotaract in our part of the world.

An online ballot, managed by the Rotary International South Pacific and Philippines Office, will be conducted from Thursday 15th September until 29th September to decide if the proposed Rotary Zone 8 regionalisation pilot will proceed.

Club Presidents will vote by representing the views of the majority of their members. Presidents will cast a vote via smartphone or computer.

The vote will read:
"This club approves participation in a pilot to develop, test and evaluate a new regional approach to supporting and governing Rotary and Rotaract clubs and members in Zone 8 from July 2023 to June 2026.” Yes or No

Voting commences from noon AEST on Thursday 15th September and will remain open for 15 days, closing at noon AEST Thursday 29th September.

Also, you are invited to two final webinars where ask further questions about the pilot. You are encouraged to attend to:
  • Learn more about the vote you are being asked to take
  • Refresh about what regionalisation is
  • Ask additional questions or clarification
The host for the webinars will be Rotary International Director Jessie Harman. Duration will be one hour with approximately fifteen minutes of introduction and presentation, with the remainder answering questions.

Content will be the same in each webinar, so you only need to attend one that best suits your schedule.

Bogus Emails To Members
This week several members received a bogus email purporting to be from Treasurer George, however George's email address shows as "presidentbrisk@hotmail.com"

Murray Anderson has investigated and concluded there is no breach of security, our data has not been hacked, and there is no malicious content in the emails. So just delete it (no need to block as the email address will be a fake).
