We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

Let’s work together, to take action to create hope in the world and in our local communities.

Polio Plus Society

In June 2023 Dr Murray Verso addressed our meeting at the Hawthorn Town Hall on the subject of The Polio Plus Society and the activities that funding by members enables the Foundation to continue the work of eradicating polio.

Information and commitment documents were distributed on the night but take-up has been sparse.

I would urge you to read the attached documents and make the small commitment of AUD160 and help make a difference.

The commitment form can be forwarded to Jane Pennington at:
Jane.Pennington@rotary9800.org or Handed to me and I will forward it to Jane.
Many thanks for your support

A Research Project Into Ageing Well

This is for your information only at this point in time.

Good Morning,
My name is Chloe Waddell, and I am currently working on my Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Psychology at Federation University Australia.

I am supervised by Dr George Van Doorn, Dr Garry Power, and Associate Professor Dixie Statham, who each have a wealth of research experience.

My project, which has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee, Federation University, focuses on the topic of Ageing Well. Specifically, what does it mean to age well in today’s Australia?

At present, we do not have a consistent definition of ‘ageing well’, and this makes it difficult for policies, programs, and organisations to support older Australians to age well. I am looking to develop a definition based on the perspectives of older Australians (65 years+).

To do so, I need to understand what factors may contribute to, or act as a barrier for, ageing well. As I know your Rotary Club may be connected with older Australians so I was hoping you might be willing to share information regarding my study.

I am recruiting people aged 65 years and older who live in Australia and can read and write English, to complete a survey.

I would be happy to discuss the study further with you if you have any questions or would like more information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

Chloe Waddell PhD Candidate - Psychology Federation University Australia

Our Sunday 6 August Hawthorn Makers Market was successful- notwithstanding cool and overcast conditions and three last minute stallholder cancellations which reduced our outdoor presence. We now look forward to 'Spring' with our next Market on Sunday, 3rd September from 10am-3pm at the heritage Hawthorn Arts Centre. Around 450 attended the August Market  which was up on the previous month. Many were 1st timers which is encouraging. It was also nice to introduce new stallholder 'Jude' who offered a large range of gender neutral clothing. (see pic).  In fact, all stallholders offered an impressive and varied range of handcrafted products - from children's toys to crafted writing implements...and more. (see pics).

Margaret has Workshop in a spin!
We also held our 3rd 'How To Do It' Workshop at the August Makers Market- this time featuring Margaret from regular stallholders, the Yarn Spinners. Visitors were shown how 100% aussie wool is spun by an expert on her spinning wheel (see pic) and taken through to the finished garment. It attracted a devoted group visitors  (see pic) with our Yvonne Wills introducing the segment and and participating guests. Thanks Yvonne. We thank all Volunteers for their support for what is a significant Club event and contributor to the Club's charitable activities.
