Annual General Meeting – Conochie Hall 4^th October 23

The club held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the 2022 / 2023 year. Thank you to the thirty-five members in attendance. We certainly had a quorum. It would be great to see this sort of attendance at our weekly club meetings.

Thank you to all chairs for providing their reports and to our secretary Justine Paragreen for collating them into the annual report. Unfortunately, the final annual report was only provided on the day of the AGM, so no motion was made at the meeting that the Club Annual Report for 2022-2023 be received and adopted. This has been deferred to the Club meeting on the 11th October 2023.

Annual Financial Report 2022 – 2023

The auditors report (containing a Balance Sheet & Profit & Loss) was provided to members on 25^th September 23. However, this was not tabled which was error and caused some confusion. However, given the auditors report did contain a Balance sheet & Profit & Loss the Club Annual Financial Report for 2022-2023 was received adopted.

The treasurer did provide some detailed information around our financial position for the:

Committee Disbursements
Fellowship Funds
Membership Funds

Perhaps a little too much detail for some members so we will review what is provided next year. The club is in a sound financial position with sufficient funds available to continue its charitable activities.

Thank you to all members who participate to raise the funds which enables the club to continue with its projects.

Nomination of Board Appointments for 2024 – 2025

There were 4 vacant positions being President Elect, Treasurer, Secretary and Fellowship Chair.

Fortunately, two of the positions – Treasurer and Secretary will be filled by me and Murray Anderson.

Members should understand that we do not have a President Elect for the current year 2023 / 2024 and therefore no president for 2024 / 2025.

As advised members of the board have been working tirelessly for some time and have asked all available members (excepting past presidents). Sadly no one has volunteered to date.

The board will continue to give some thought to how we manage this situation.

Computers to East Timor

The International Committee has just organized and paid for a consignment of 10 complete computer systems to go to a school in Timor Leste.

The Club was contacted by Anna Matarazzo who introduced herself:

“I recently volunteered in Timor Leste at Instituto Profissional de Canossa (IPDC) and The Canossa school in Dili.

I am keen to find out how I can get/buy computers for the Canossa school (4000 children) currently they only have 25 working computers which are really old anyway)

St Vincent de Paul and the Catholic Diocese of Darwin of which I’m part of are happy to find the funds to do this “.

The freight charges will be met by the Catholic Diocese of Darwin.

My Greatest Call Fundraising Lunch

Wednesday 6th March 2024

We are pleased to announce that Myeloma Australia will be hosting the first Greatest Call Long Lunch at The Glass House in Melbourne on Wednesday 6th March 2024. We have a huge line up of talent that will keep you entertained as well as beautiful food from The Big Group. The purpose of the event is to raise the profile of myeloma and Myeloma Australia in the wider community.

We will have some big names from the sporting commentary world that will sit alongside our Ambassador Sandy Roberts. Sandy will be joined by his friends and colleagues Bruce McAvaney, OAM, Eddie McGuire, Brian Taylor and Jennifer Keyte to name a few with musical entertainment provided by Frankie J. Holden, OAM.

This year, I urge all of you to think big about The Rotary Foundation.

To reach our goals, and make the impact we know we can make, we must think outside the square and embrace innovation.

Make this a year to think big about Foundation supported projects. Engage in a Foundation

district or global grant.

Let's also think big about our Polio Fundraising this year. Plan for the World Polio Day on October 24th.

Thinking big about our Foundation also means that through it, our impact goes beyond the current Rotary year.

Lastly, lets remember that our efforts to make the world a better place go beyond our time on earth. Consider how you might leave a legacy by making a gift or a commitment to a Rotary endowment. This will ensure that Rotary's future generation will have greater resources to create positive change in so many ways.

KIDS’ PLAY AT MAKERS MARKET TO CONTINUE.

It could be called the ‘Bunnings Principle’. Get a kid for a Snag (without onion of course) and mum & dad will usually order extras. Sort of sell 3 for the price of 1. All makes commercial sense right.

Well, the recent 1st October Hawthorn Makers Market introduced a first:

A staffed kid’s play activity area offering, face painting, colouring books, story books plus some puzzles etc. The objective being to encourage bringing the kids along so mum, dad or guardian can explore what’s on offer at the Market without ankle biters in tow. Again, all about helping the numbers and store holder revenue. Whilst the October market attendance was down a little (majority of Melbournians recovering from Grand Final withdrawal symptoms or away for the long weekend), we’re optimistic the concept will be a success.

Boppy the Clown will join us at the November Market and comes with an array of fun activities to engage the kids through storytelling, balloon twisting and bubbles. Christmas gift giving will also feature strongly over coming weeks. If you haven’t been to the Market thus far, why not give it a go. Kids and all!
