Let’s Unite for Good in our local community

This week’s reflections from President Vijay Susarla

Wednesday 08th October 2025

Rotary Camberwell’s AGM and SGMs (Special General Meeting) were held on 08th Oct. 2025, with 70% of the financial members present.

It was good to see a large membership participation at the meetings which shows the interest and commitment members have in our organisation.

Here is the status of the board positions declared as elected for the Rotary year 2026 – 2027:

President:  Daya Govender
President Elect: Vacant
Treasurer: Vacant
Secretary: Murray Anderson (2nd term)
Director Community Service: Nadia Hamilton (2nd term)
Director International Service:  Vacant
Director Membership: David Chu

There are few Board positions to be filled in for the Rotary year 2026 – 2027.  I request you to consider joining the Board and help our organisation run efficiently. If you are interested to join the Board, please contact Daya Govender as soon as possible.

Thanks to all those volunteered at the Hawthorn Makers Market (Brenda Innes, Annie Murphy, Yvonne Wills, DGE Graeme Hope, David Troon, John de Carro and Nav Muniratna) and Camberwell Sunday Market (Lindy Anderson, Murray Anderson, Geroge de Souza and Fabienne Nichola), on 05th Oct.’25.

Our Board has approved to cancel our regular weekly meeting on Wed. 22nd Oct.’25, giving an opportunity for members to attend either ROMP multi Club meeting (in Shepparton) or 50th Anniversary of RC Glenferrie being held on the 22nd Oct.

Looking forward to seeing you all next Wed. 15th Oct., for a presentation on “Peace Builder” by Gabe Hau, a promoter of peacebuilding projects and inspiring a culture of peace within Rotary for many years.

Stories
Sad News - Adrian Campbell
It is with great sadness to advise that our respected and much-loved member Adrian Campbell passed away at 4am this morning.

Adrian was an exemplary human being, and a Rotarian of the highest standard. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends as well as our Club. He fought the good fight against Myeloma until the end, and leaves a legacy of support and research into this disease.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Hawthorn Makers Market - 5th October 2025
THE BAKING QUEEN 'ETERNALLY GRATEFUL TO ROTARY'

Regular Hawthorn Makers Market stallholder, Marie Drinkwater (see pic), known as 'The Baking Queen, says she is 'eternally grateful to Rotary.' She was one of 50 local artisans at the October 5 Market selling their original hand crafted items.

In fact, Marie's gratitude extends beyond Camberwell Rotary, which provides a monthly outlet for her popular scones and cookies, to Canterbury Rotary, who helped launch her career nearly 30 years ago.
According to Marie, in 1995, Canterbury Rotary advertised a free five-day management course at Coopers Lybrand (now PwC). Marie, then a mature-aged Monash Business graduate seeking work, applied and was accepted. “It was quite an in-depth five days,” she recalls. The experience soon helped her secure a long term position at Victoria Legal Aid.

Years later, after caring full-time for her ill mother, herself a professional baker, Marie turned to baking and created The Baking Queen, building her own website and social media following.
In 2011, she was invited to speak at Canterbury Rotary about the long-term benefits of that early management course.

Today, while also working part-time at Box Hill Hospital as a Carer Consultant, Marie continues to bring her delicious treats to the Hawthorn Makers Market each month-  another fine example of Rotary making a difference in our community.

The next Hawthorn Makers Market Market is on Sunday 2nd November from 10-3 at the heritage Hawthorn Arts Centre.  As we approach the festive season, there'll be gifts galore to explore, including Marie's scrumptious scones and cookies for that short term hunger fix.
