Kooyong Conversations – Cluster Event
The event was moderated by Paula Fenwick and questions were put to both speakers that covered the topics of Domestic Violence, Gender equality, Issues that matter most to constituents of Kooyong, Housing and rising costs, Political Conduct and Australia’s future considering the global landscape. Not simple topics for discussion by any means.
Did you know? Amelia Hamer is the grand niece of former Victorian premier Sir Rupert “Dick” Hamer and a member of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie.
Guest Speaker
Our Guest Speaker for the evening was member Dhayalan Govender (Daya) who initially gave us an interesting insight into the use of the chemical compound Tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), and the products manufactured.
Daya then gave us an insight into his life with many pictures. Daya has a diverse cultural background (Indian, Mauritian, French, British) and was born in South Africa. He is a chemical engineer by profession and has worked in many countries throughout his career. He migrated to Australia in 1995 and became a citizen in 2000. He has two sons and five grandchildren and met his current wife at his previous Rotary club of Wagga Wagga.
Daya was inducted into the club in October 2023 and is on our Membership committee.
2025 Scotch College Hike
Our member David Chu’s son (Tommy Chu) who attends Scotch College participated in a hike to raise funds to help marginalised women and children break the cycle of poverty.
Tommy bettered his effort from last year of 72 Klms and this year hiked 83.9 klms in 24 hours. A significant effort and thank you to all members who donated to this cause.
Board Meeting 12th March
The board met post the dinner meeting to discuss all matters relating to this club. The main actions out of this meeting were to approve various proposals for funding from the Youth & Vocation and Community Services committees, discuss and approve the Art Show budget, discuss next steps for the New Venue for our club and review North Balwyn’s invitation for our club to participate in their 45 year anniversary event.
Proposals for Funding - $28,500 approved for various causes. This will take our spend for the year to around $107,000. Outstanding work by our committees
Art Show Budget – Some deviation in income and expenses from last year’s budget but with similar returns. Approved in principle by board subject to update around numbers for the Gala event
North Balwyn 45 Year Anniversary Event – Agreed by board that Camberwell will participate in support of one of our Community Group and former Eastside Cluster club. Therefore, no club meeting on 7th May but a combined event with North Balwyn on 8th May at Green Acres Golf Club
New Venue for Club – Given Basscare delay there is no need to vacate by 30th June 2025. Decision on next steps being sought from Fellowship chair and committee.
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 19th March at Conochie Hall when Chairs of the Art Show, Youth & Vocation and Community will discuss their activities for the year.

March is Rotary's month of focusing on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, so it is appropriate to issue a further update on progress made under our Global Grant GG2456718 which is bringing Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Training to remote mountain villages in eastern Timor Leste.
In our last Update in November last year, we reported on the Inspection and Scoping work carried out by the Volunteer Team lead by Vijay Susarla which visited various project sites in and around the regions of Baguia and Baucau.
During the course of this visit in October2024 they were informed by Brother Tomas, the manager of Timor Roofing and Training Lad from whom we purchase our galvanised Water Tanks, that a similar need for Clean Water exists in schools in the city of Baucau itself. Timor Roofing and Training company is a Steel Rolling Mill and Training facility that was originally set up by 3 Melbourne based Rotary Clubs following Timor Leste's then newly gained independence from Indonesia. It is now owned and operated by the Don Bosco Organisation which is a worldwide Catholic Organisation operating as an NGO in Timor Leste.
The city of Baucau is located on the northern coast of Timor Leste and is its second largest population centre. Further inquiries made through Timor Roofing & Training Lda indicated that there could be as many as sixty schools in the city of Baucau that need a Clean Water supply. We have received confirmation from the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) "that there does indeed appear to be a need for water in many schools throughout Baucau" and we believe that this could become the basis for a new Global Grant Project.
We have had discussions and a Zoom conference with three other Rotary Districts which have expressed support for what could end up being a new AUD $400,000 Global Grant Project.
For this to become a new Global Grant Project we would first need to carry out a new Scoping Trip and an Application for this has recently been lodged with our District 9800 Humanitarian Grants Committee in the hope that we can ascertain sufficient information on the supply (or non-supply) of water to schools in city of Baucau, to warrant the sending of a Scoping Team there before the end of this Rotary Year on the 30th June 2025.
In the meantime, work on our existing Global Grant GG2456718 continues with the following progress having been made since our last update.
Installed 10 Water Tanks and constructed two Toilet blocks which represents 50% completion of our Project Objectives.
Provided hands-on construction work helping the local contractor building a Toilet block at Loiholihoo Primary School in Viqueque district.
Finalised WASH training logistics with a local Medical Doctor in the two schools where we constructed the Toilets.
Inspected Water Tanks and Toilets that have been completed in the past three years for functionality, usage, and cleaning maintenance of the facilities for long term sustainability.
Met with our project partners Timor Varde (an organisation sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP), as well as with Timor Roofing and Training company, and Leaders from five different villages . The outcome of these meetings was to better understand the Clean Water requirements of schools in the Bacau region.
This month's focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene makes it a good time for Rotary Clubs and other Donors to review their financial commitments for both this and next Financial Years and we are always very appreciative of any financial support to this very worthwhile project.

THERE WAS A BUZZ IN THE AIR AT OUR MARCH HAWTHORN MAKERS MARKET.
We were delighted to welcome stallholders and visitors to our first Hawthorn Makers Market of the year on Sunday March 2 at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. The Market had a festive buzz, with the Glenferrie Festival in full swing just around the corner.
We introduced several new stallholders, including a talented maker of handcrafted lamps (see pic), a creator of lavender-based beauty products and an artisan crafting fluffy cat and dog toys (see pic). Another newcomer brought a delicious twist to our culinary offerings with his handmade pizza bases plus freshly prepared ‘ready to go’ small pizzas. He gave several pizzas away at the end of the day (see pic).
As always, our regulars added to the charm, including our Lyndon Joss, who once again generously offered jars of his scrumptious honey in exchange for a small cash donation to our charity funds. As in the past, they get snapped up quickly—just like hot cakes... or perhaps more accurately, like cold jars of honey! Thanks Lyndon.
Finally a big thank you to everyone (volunteers, stallholders, patrons and Council staff) who joined us and contributed to a successful 2025 launch market.
We’ll do it all again on Sunday 6th April from 10-3 at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

My Greatest Walk is a COMMUNITY EVENT. We are looking for individuals and families - those affected by myeloma and their networks - to come together to raise further funds and awareness to support the 22,000 Australians living with myeloma.
