Presidential Press

Happy New Year to all members of the Rotary Club of Camberwell and to all bulletin subscribers. Looking forward to seeing as many of you in person very soon. As I embark on the last few months of my Presidency, I thank you all in advance for your continued efforts in your committees and individual club activities.

I am also meeting regularly with our President Elect Michelle Critchley to ensure that the handover is as smooth as possible. Speaking of handover and more specifically Changeover we are yet to decide on the Changeover date given the Art Show preparations commence on 23^rd June, Gala Event is on 27^th June and last day of the Art Show is 6^th July. So, Changeover could be 18^th June or 9^th July.

Our Club started 2025 as it ended 2024 with a Fellowship event, this time at the Tower Hotel in Hawthorn. Yet again an extremely well attended event enjoyed by all. This is one of the venues under consideration for our new meeting venue in the 2025-2026 Rotary year. Pictures are courtesy of David Baker.

Congratulations to a very happy member Don Jago on becoming a Great Grandfather for the very first time – Great Grandson named “Jasper”.

Improving Young Girls’ Access to Continuous Education

Research shows that girls often miss school due to inadequate menstruation facilities. Construction of twelve new menstrual health management (MHM) toilets that will help ensure that girls can attend school during menstruation has commenced at the Kampong Thom High School in Cambodia. The Rotary Club of Camberwell has partnered with the Running water project to deliver these facilities supported by a District Grant from the Rotary Foundation.

Camberwell Rotary Funding – St Jude Scholarship

As for your wonderful Christmas Gifts, we gave some of them to families with children, and the remainder to refugee children, in the South Melbourne and Albert Park area. The BIG TEDDY went to a child under 5. What joy all your presents brought!

The School of St Jude - Thank You for Your Gift

Dear George and everyone at the Rotary Club of Camberwell,

I understand that we only have a few days left before Christmas, but I wanted to reach out and thank you very much for your support. Because of you, hundreds of students and teachers will have access to the world.

It's amazing how generous supporters like yourself have helped us grow our ICT programs over the years. Many students arrive at St Jude's with little to no experience with computers, yet they quickly catch up. Getting hands-on experience of digital devices while at school goes a long way to improving our students' prospects in their future careers and endeavours.

More than 400 students and teachers will receive their very own laptops—an unforgettable Christmas gift so thank you! I cannot wait to share with you all the amazing stories and updates of your wonderful donation.

Camp Getaway Working Bee - 28th Feb 25 – 2 Mar 25

Camp Getaway provides a quality recreational camp experience for people of all abilities. The target groups assisted at Camp Getaway are people with disabilities and special needs.

The Rotary Club of Camberwell has booked the dates above and we will again be assisted by our former member and now retired painter – Andy Spry.

Thousands of voluntary hours have gone into redeveloping the site, which now includes self-contained units with full disabled facilities, modern dormitories and many other improvements.

This working bee at Camp Getaway is a weekend away and provides a great opportunity for club fellowship. As there is always refurbishment and maintenance activities to be done this is a great hands-on Community project for our Club.
