It is with mixed emotions that I write this last "Musings" - yes I am looking forward to stepping slightly down from the workload of President, but I will miss this opportunity to communicate to you all on a regular basis.
It's been an amazing year - I started my year with long hair and a beard after Melbourne was locked down in March, we were lucky to squeeze in a limited Changeover, then we were into Lockdown again up until December. We returned to face-to-face meetings from December into the new year, then we went into two more Lockdowns up to a few weeks ago. And all through this immense disruption to our lives, and to our Rotary experience, I was constantly amazed and deeply appreciative of the spirit of the Camberwell Rotarians: you adapted to new technologies (most of you cheerfully!), we all became experts on Zoom, we learned to manage the restricted charity budgets, and we enthusiastically supported the smaller number of Fellowship events we managed. For this I am deeply grateful to you all, and thank you for your support and kind words.
Representing the Art Show Committee, Geoff, Brenda and Andrew brought us up to date with the transition to the 2021 Camberwell Online Gallery, after the disappointing but necessary decision not to proceed with a physical show at Swinburne University. The Online Gallery will feature some 800 carefully judged paintings (out of 1600 submissions), and will run from 14 July - 1 August. The website www.camberwellartshow.org.au has been further developed to enable easy searching by genre, medium and artist, and this development will be used for future art shows.
I cannot overstate the work the Art Show Committee does each year, and especially this year where all the work for a physical show was done, then at the last minute more work to convert it to the Online Gallery. We must all thank Geoff Heath and his heroic band for an amazing job. And as John Steven eloquently said, running the Art Show is the opportunity for ALL Camberwell Rotarians to pitch in and help each year for the last 55 years. Because it's an Online Gallery this year, that doesn't let us off the hook! If you are on Facebook and/or Instagram, Share and Like as much as possible - this is incredibly powerful for an online event. If you are not on social media, you can still email soft copies of the Flyers and Posters to all your contacts. And if you are not on friendly terms with any computer, you can still put up posters in cafe windows. Please do what you can, and by doing so you are supporting our hard-working Art Show Committee.
A reminder that our R100 Project the Yarra Bank Playground Gala Opening is on 8 August - make sure the date is in your diary, and invite your family and friends.
In closing, I must thank Patrick Docherty for making Camberwell Rotary history by being the first to be President for a second full term, and I ask all Members to be enthusiastic Rotarians and support Patrick and the Board when asked to pitch in.
Well that's it from me. Have a great year in Rotary.
We know you are all aware of the ongoing COVID situation in Melbourne and restrictions on numbers attending functions, and would appreciate that this has made planning for the District Changeover a little challenging.
We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had, and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.
Hence, we have moved the District Changeover event to Saturday 10 July. Same details, same venue, same time.
Thank you to everyone who has already booked.
If you are unable to attend on this new date, or have queries, please contact Jane Pennington on jane.pennington@rotary9800.org to arrange a refund.
If you have not yet booked, please do so, and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues. It will be "first in, best dressed" for tickets, as we are unsure what the restrictions will allow us exactly then. The invitation is attached with booking detaills.
We both look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful occasion!
Fun for all the family is planned for the grand opening of the Rotary 100 Playground at Yarra Bank Reserve on August 8th commencing at 12:00pm, with children's entertainment, food and drink and, lots of music on the way to make it a sparkling day.
This Playground redevelopment is an R100 project in conjunction with the City of Boroondara, with the Rotary Clubs of Glenferrie and Camberwell as major contributors, and well as the Rotary Clubs of Canterbury and North Balwyn.
The Playground Opening, featuring the unique Rotary interactive play sculpture, will begin a series of events in Boroondara aimed at raising the profile of Rotary, attracting new members and celebrating 100 years of Doing Good in the World. It is hoped that every Rotarian will bring their families and friends, and especially the little ones, to experience the Grand Opening and the playground. So be sure to spread the word!
The playground will be opened by the Mayor of Boroondara, Cr. Garry Thompson, who will be joined by District Governor Dale Hoy in a ceremony heralding a celebration of the achievements of the past century, and welcoming the start of the next 100 years.
Acknowledging the significance of the Yarra bank area to First Nations peoples, a smoking ceremony and welcome to country is planned, to be offered by the traditional owners of the land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation.
Construction of the new playground at Yarra Bank Reserve is now well advanced, with the Rotary contribution, the unique interactive play sculpture, expected to be installed either this week, or next, depending upon Covid-19 restrictions. The design of the sculpture has included unique features, developed by Benjamin Gilbert at Agency of Sculpture, to enable little arms to row the huge oars that are a key play feature of the sculpture, while protecting little hands and heads from injury. With musical features, water features and some other things never before seen in a play feature, the Yarra Bank Reserve's new playground will delight families for years to some, a fitting tribute and a special gift, from Rotary to the families of Boroondara.
The hull of the canoe is taking shape. The final version will be polished and burnished
