Volume 67 | Issue 15 |  17 October 2022

We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

Two significant incidents touched the lives of the Victorian community this past week. The first is the 20th anniversary of the Bali bombing which also impacted many others around the world. Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost loved ones in this terrible event.
The second event is the persistent heavy rain causing havoc with floods compounded by the Goulburn River bursting their banks in regional Victoria. Similarly, the Werribee and Maribyrnong Rivers have impacted Melbourne northern and western suburbs. Special mention to our Rotarian friends in Rochester who have been evacuated and face the prospect of water damaged homes. We wish the affected communities well with the upcoming recovery.
Last week’s speaker provided us a rare insight on the complexities of sentencing criminal offenders in our Court system. ‘The Judge,’ the Honourable Justice Paul Coghlan AO, KC demonstrated this challenging task with a real-life case study. It was a revelation to walk through the process how to comply with the numerous provisions of the statutory sentencing requirements as well as consider the personal issues of the case, to arrive at an appropriate sentence. It reflects his honour’s high intellect, passion for upholding the law as well as his compassion for a distinguished career dealing with some of the most highly publicised cases including the murder case of the girl thrown from the Westgate Bridge by her father.
Thank you to members who assisted at the last Camberwell Sunday Market – Maria Wiecher, Peter Pratt, Patty Laufenberg, and Yvonne Wills.
Next week’s meeting is Club Forum. This is an opportunity for all members to raise any issues for discussion. I hope you can attend, to contribute to the discussions.
Look forward to seeing you then.

Fishy Tales

Recently, many in the club were a little sceptical about Past President Murray's tales of fishing with Camberwell Rotarian Warwick Heil, that landed them some great catches. Well, here are the photos to prove it.
Warwick kindly arranged a deep sea fishing expedition while Murray was up on the Gold Coast, and weren't they biting! Ending up around 20 miles out to sea, Murray managed to land and impressive Tuna and a Dolphinfish (Mahi Mahi).
Unfortunately, when you catch your own fish and plan to cook them, someone has to do the preparation and, after a few hours and countless YouTube videos, Murray's apartment resembled a crime scene as the Tuna was hacked rather than filleted. What was salvaged we are assured was delicious and well worth the effort!

Sunday Market Roster in October

A special thank you to those members who volunteered for additional shifts this month to
overcome the shortfall in member availability. Greatly appreciated.
Spinning around? Well get out of our way and come along to this Sunday's Camberwell Market and enjoy a day filled with our greatest export - Kylie Minogue. If you just can't get her out of your head then this is the day for you. Enjoy lip sync performances, trivia, a Kylie look-alike contest, and more!
C'mon Rotarians, do the Locomotion!
