Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club History and Community Objectives

Chairman Patrick Docherty Peter was a Director of Cricket Victoria for 13 years and of Cricket Australia for 5 yeras and was awarded an OAM 2 years ago for services to Cricket and Australian Rules Football. Peter's association with the Camberwell Cricket Club dates back to the time he left school in 1959 and has continued until the present time spending 64 years of his life at the Camberwell Sports Ground. He has held many positions at the Club including 4 periods as President, he was also President of the Old Scotch Football Club for 2 years during this time. The previous Camberwell Club has its origin dating back to 1864 and participated for most of this time in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association until 1996 when a merger with the Collingwood Club in 2006 brought it into the Victorian Premier Cricket Competition as the Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club. The Club has many Senior and Juniour Teams both male and female competing in regular competition.

He joined Rotary Chadstone East Malvern after he rerurned to Melbourne in 2015 and was President in 2018-19. He is currently the Rotary Chadstone East Malvern Environment Team Leader.. Alick has been CEO of Seasol since 2015. Prior to that he was CEO of Tulliy Sugar for 3 years and earlier in his career he was an agricultural commodity trader and exporter. In addition Alick is a Director of the Australian Export Grain Innovation Centre He is a keen, though very amateur fly fisherman and gardener. |

Chairman: Lyndon Joss Keith garfuated in Electrical Engineering more than 50 years ago.He has spent much of his prof essional career at Monash University in the Information Technology Service where he enjoyed a variety of roles including teaching engineering undergraduates about computer systems and leading the computer networking section. After retiring Keith developed a keen interest in the emerging field of electric vehicles, culminating in acquiring a Tesla in 2019.He continues to follow developments, in this fast changing field. For relaxation Keith enjoys playing clarinet and bagpipes and is a volunteer dog training instructor with the German Shepherd Dog Club.

The Club is undertaking it's yearly 38mate walk to build awareness of Myeloma - the theme derives from 38 Australians who are diagnosed every week with this incurable blood cancer - Camberwell Rotary has been associated with Myeloma Australia for over 20 years - and this continues with it's multi- Club/multi-District award-winning outreach ROMP initiative in regional Victoria. So SAVE THE DATE - 38mate Club Walk for Myeloma - Sunday 5th March 11.00am at Hawthorn Makers Market. All Club members can join our Hawthorn Makers Market team at Hawthorn Town Hall on Sunday 5th March - it's the second highest fundraising vehicle the Club has & involves over 60 stallholders promoting their craft - please support it - and also participate in a leisurely walk down Glenferrie Rd at 11am to raise awareness for those living with myeloma. You can register to walk on the myeloma website for $20 per person - www.myeloma.org.au - follow the 38mate prompts, to "Hawthorn Vic Walk" Both maroon and white TEAM MYELOMA tees are available here as well in most sizes ($30 ) and white 38mate baseball caps ($25) - but please order before 24th Feb to ensure delivery before the walk on 5th March. We will bring extra caps and tees to the market stall to purchase on the day - to ensure you can kit out to help build myeloma awareness during the walk. All families and pooches are welcome - as well as all Rotarians. It's on again! The ever-popular Working Bee at Camp Getaway is being organised by the Community Service Committee, and will commence on Friday evening with the traditional pub dinner at the Axedale Tavern at 105 High Street Axedale VIC 3551. There is plenty of accomodation at the camp, just bring a pillow, sleeping bag (or sheet/blankets) and toiletries. Saturday will be busy, with painting, gardening, cleaning etc - and there are plenty of "light duties" jobs to do as well. Ex Camberwell Rotarian Andy Spry and his team will be leading the painting duties, so there will be plenty of professionals around for guidance and assistance. This will also be good exposure of the Club to potential new members as well. We will need two volunteers to help at our stand, each doing 2 hour shifts. |

This week in lieu of our normal Dinner Meeting, we are having a Fellowship Night to pack FORaMEAL emergency meal packs. There are jobs within the packing process for all ages and abilities. For those who have done these packing nights before, you will know what a fun night it is, all working together around the tables to fill and seal as many of these emergency food packs as we can in one evening. For new members, as well as spouses, partners, children, grandchildren, it's a must! So visitors, guests prospective members and even members of the public are very welcome, what a way to demonstrate "Rotary in Action". And we will all have the satisfaction that these FORaMEAL packs will be going to destinations, both locally and abroad, where there is desperate need for food relief. Anzac Day Commemoration

Chairman: George DeSouza John Dean grew up in East Malvern and in Box Hill until 1963 when at the age of 28 he married in Warrrnambool. He is the father of two children and now proud grandfather of of five grandchildren. To mark ANZAC day on the eve of the meeting, John Dean will outline his cousin’s heroic story in World War two. Leslie Gordon Knight, DSO (7 March 1921 – 16 September 1943) was an Australian bomber pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1943 for his role in Operation Chastise while flying with No. 617 Squadron RAF. Knight's crew, flying in N-Nan, attacked, hit and breached the Eder Dam, the second dam to be attacked, after his comrades had previously scored one hit and one miss. Knight’s family lived in Camberwell. He was killed at the age of 21 and is buried at Den Ham General Cemetery in the Netherlands. John feels honoured that he has been asked to speak this evening about his heroic cousin, Les Knight.

She began her marketing career with Intrepid Travel in Australia. Moving to London, she worked as Director, New Media Marketing for Access Conferences, then as Marketing Director for McBains Cooper Property and Construction UK. On moving to Hong Kong with her family, she worked on various fundraising campaigns and online marketing businesses. Returning to Australia , Maxine put her skills towards helping those in need - managing You Matter's day to day operations and fundraising activities. |

Due to the closure of the Conochie Centre, the venue for the meeting of 14 June 2023 will be held at the Zelman Room, Hawthorn Arts Centre, 360 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn. It will be a buffet style meal. The cost will be $35 plus drinks at bar prices. Prior to the meeting, you may wish to visit the exhibition by 2022 Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award winner Caroline Calway which opens Saturday 10 June. Part of the night is also set aside for the Camberwell Rotary Art Show briefing, so bring along your partners as well. |

Polio Update

Chairman: Graeme Hope Murray is a member of the Rotary Club of Williamstown and was Governor of District 9800 in 2014 - 2015. Professionally Murray is a retired medical practitioner and worked for 36 years in his general practice along his wife who is also a GP. Murray took on the role of End Polio Now Coordinator for Rotary Zone 8 from 1st July 2022. He is looking forward to supporting Clubs as Rotary gets closer to its goal of a poloio free World. |

It's all hands on deck for this phase of the Camberwell Art Show. On Monday all the equipment required to stage the Show is transported from Kent's Storage to the ATC. On Tuesday ALL paintings have to be received physically and digitally into the Show. On Wednesday ALL paintings have to be hung on the panels. Thursday is for finalsing the position of artwork on the panels, and for judging. Friday is for final adjustments to the panels, cleaning up, and setting up for the Gala Opening. |

The 2023 Camberwell Art Show is over, and next week is the opportunity for all club members to come together again at a club meeting, after all their hard work. The Camberwell Art Show Chair, Jon Oppy will be away for two more weeks or so, and an outline of the outcome of the Art Show will be presented on his return. The Changeover is still a week away but the incoming President George de Souza, will take the opportunity at this meeting to outline his plans for the year ahead. As this is the first meeting for the new Rotary year, it is a timely presentation. Conochie hall is still unavailable and the club's meeting will be held at a temporary venue at the Parkview Room, Camberwell Civic Centre.There is ample parking on Inglesby Road. Please enter through the sliding door to the west of Ignite café (the park side) and a team member will be there to greet you.
