We gather together on the lands of the traditional custodians, the Wurundjeri people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.

Our two Rylarians 2024
Last week our granddaughter Zoe (18) and our neighbour's son Ethan (21) spent a week at Camp Getaway with 19 other young people, 18 years and over. RYLA stands for "Rotary Youth Leader Awards" and we saw these two at the dinner mid week, at the closing ceremony on Saturday and then drove them home.
At the Dinner

What a week of growing, learning, courage, bravery, introspection, friendship, challenge, laughter and tears. Those leading the transformation had been RYLA participants in past years - with assistance from trained and experienced leaders. Both Zoe and Ethan came away with new understanding of themselves and others.

Graduation Day

We plan to have them visit one of our weekly meetings in 2025 to share their amazing experiences. The photos will represent some of the life at RYLA. Thanks to our Club for sponsoring these two remarkable adults.

Camberwell Rotary Funding – St Jude Scholarship
Dear George and everyone at the Rotary Club of Camberwell,

Greetings from The School of St Jude.

The ninth cohort of Community Service Year (CSY) volunteers has successfully completed their volunteering and are now heading to higher education institutions across Tanzania. We are thrilled to inform you that Denis has been accepted into Institute of Accountancy Arusha, located in Arusha, and will be pursuing Bachelor of Procurement and Logistics Management.

This year, all 131 of our volunteers made a significant impact in their communities. Out of these, 93 volunteers taught over 22,000 students across 38 secondary schools in the Arusha and Manyara regions, while the rest worked in various departments at St Jude’s. Before heading off to university, Denis shared his reflections on the CSY experience, which you can see below.

Last month, we celebrated the end of CSY for the Class of 2023 with a special event where the volunteers had the opportunity to debrief. They shared the challenges they faced during their service year and how they overcame them through teamwork and determination.

This event also served as an introduction to higher education! Keynote speakers, including Beyond St Jude’s (BSJ) scholars from various universities, offered valuable advice on what to expect in the next phase of their journey. Topics such as academic expectations, building friendships, social life, and managing finances were discussed to help prepare the volunteers for university life.

Looking ahead, the Beyond St Jude’s team has been traveling across the country throughout November and December to visit all of our first-year scholars. We want to ensure they are settling into university life and not feeling overwhelmed. During these visits, we will gather updates, photos, and stories, so you can look forward to reading about Denis’s new experiences in your first update next year.

We are excited to continue sharing Denis’s progress with you as he embarks on this next chapter of his education.

George and everyone at the Rotary Club of Camberwell, thank you so much for being an integral part of Denis’s higher education journey. Your support has made this dream a reality.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Fausta

Hawthorn Christmas Makers Market: A Festive Success!

The Hawthorn December 1 Makers Market capped off 2024 as the year's best-attended market brimming with Christmas spirit and seasonal cheer. The sunny day set the perfect stage for over 70 stallholders, both indoors and outdoors, offering a diverse range of handmade gifts, seasonal decorations and unique treasures. We also welcomed Boroondara Mayor Cr Sophie Torney and former Mayor Cr Felicity Sinfield.

Highlights included the ever-popular Rotary cakes, alongside beautifully crafted jewellery, children’s wear, woodwork, pottery and needlework. Christmas decorations were also a crowd favourite. Adding to the festive atmosphere was Sing Australia who performed Christmas carols. Our regular children’s face painter also brought smiles to young faces. Mark your calendars for the next Hawthorn Makers Market Makers Market on Sunday, 2nd March 2025.

Mock Job Interviews - Final Debrief

Final Debrief:
  • Working with one of the senior teachers (Elizabeth Foulds), the students still had minimal class time to learn to write a Cover Letter and Resume
  • 32 Rotarian volunteers interviewed 108 students over 2 mornings in early September. Each student had a 10 minute interview with 3 minute feedback
  • Students responded positively regardless of major technology problems re volunteers not having the necessary information for each applicant
  • The school is keen to have this project permanently within the curriculum - as part of their subject “Connections for Life”

Changes for 2025:
  • Students will be offered more classroom time to write up their Cover Letter and Resume
  • Communication will be improved by each student being responsible for printing a hard copy of their application and handing it to the teacher at least 2 weeks before the interviews start. I will then distribute them to our interviewers in plenty of time
  • We will provide time keepers
  • In conjunction with Bryan Goodwin (one of the Rotarians who set up this project many years ago), Elizabeth and I have created a new list of vocations to relate to modern times with more variety of choices. I will send a list of suggestions for Bryan to update the current list
  • I have offered to speak to the Year 9 students next year to introduce the Rotary and Mock Job Interviews project and stress the benefits
I commend this valuable project to the Club, and look forward to to continued support in 2025.

Camp Getaway Working Bee - 28th Feb 25 – 2 Mar 25

Camp Getaway provides a quality recreational camp experience for people of all abilities. The target groups assisted at Camp Getaway are people with disabilities and special needs.

The Rotary Club of Camberwell has booked the dates above and we will again be assisted by our former member and now retired painter – Andy Spry.
Thousands of voluntary hours have gone into redeveloping the site, which now includes self-contained units with full disabled facilities, modern dormitories and many other improvements.

This working bee at Camp Getaway is a weekend away and provides a great opportunity for club fellowship. As there is always refurbishment and maintenance activities to be done this is a great hands-on Community project for our Club.

Further information to follow.
