Volume 67 | Issue 3 |  25 July 2022

We gather together on the traditional Lands of the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We pay our respects to all of Melbourne’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and to our shared future together.
It was great to welcome back Don Jago and Andrew Hunter following a period of isolation due to Covid.

One could be forgiven to conclude that it was ‘all about me’ at our last club meeting, understandably as the speaker’s theme was ‘Introducing the President’. Having previously delivered a Member Behind the Badge some time ago and working with the same material, an attempt was made to mix up the standard details of life’s cycles with some left of centre fun facts. Members had to also endure some historical context of my personal background, one of my subjects of interest.

I encourage all members to take the opportunity to present their Member Behind the Badge. The presentation is inevitably unique and enables all members to learn a little more about you. It is an invaluable way to integrate into the club and often has the added bonus of starting conversations as you discover common threads with others.

Converting to a cashless bar proved to be reasonably harmless. Members adjusted well tapping their debit/credit card. This will now become the standard process eliminating another banking step.

After the club meeting, the first Board meeting met at my home, as the first step to encourage all monthly committee meetings to be home based. Unlike previous home meetings, catering is being kept very simple to minimise the effort on the host. There is one health warning - social conversations can continue well into the night.

Some discussion items at the Board meeting were:
  • The allocation of Committee Budgets
  • The planned RICON Club dinner on 29 May 2023
  • Increased number of Fellowship and Chairs’ off-site meetings
  • The development of a 3-year membership strategic plan
  • Canterbury Centre catering cost increase
Further details will be advised over the next two weeks or so. As with previous years, Minutes of the Board meeting as well as Chair Reports are available on the Club Runner website. Please note it will always be one month in arrears as Minutes are accepted at the following Board meeting.

Next week’s meeting is promising to be a great night. The theme is honouring our past presidents. Covid lockdown prevented this annual event taking place for the past two years. We will also be treated to Indian cuisine as well as a demonstration of Indian dance. Please register your loved ones to attend.

I look forward to seeing you all next week.

2022 Camberwell Art Show - Swinburne Obligations
A major condition of our partnership with Swinburne for this year's art show was that our club will use our best endeavours to provide a minimum of five (5) introductions to organisations that may employ students for a full-time one-year Workplace Placement.

Art Show Chair, Murray Anderson, is now calling all members to ensure we meet this obligation. If you either currently work at an organisation who may need a workplace student, or knows through your network/friendship circles of such an organisation, please contact Murray.

JENNIFER JONES - PRESIDENT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Jennifer Jones, member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, will be the first woman to take office as Rotary International President in the service organization’s 117-year existence on 1 July 2022.

During her one-year term, Jones will focus on building new relationships and establishing collaborations with organizations that share Rotary’s commitment to driving impact through humanitarian service and to developing leaders around the globe. She has also made Rotary’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion a key part of her presidential platform.

“Diversity has long been one of our core values and continues to serve as a foundation for how we interact with each other and our communities,” said Jones. “I know that my experiences and perspective as a woman mean that I bring a different lens to how I see and approach opportunities and challenges for our organization. I hope to be a catalyst for similar opportunities for leaders from all backgrounds that comprise the global mosaic of our organization. We are stronger, more creative, and more effective when we ask for and leverage those diverse perspectives to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.”
